Bird Press is pleased to announce the release of The Trudge of Insects.
This book project began in 2002, when I started photographing insects from the collection of the Entomology labs at the University of Massachusetts, with access generously provided by Benjamin Normark. At the time, I was captivated by the idea of looking closely at these beautiful specimens and their death silence created by the wounds of the display pins.
Later in 2006, my friend, the boxer poet Brendan Jones agreed to write the 94-part poem that accompanies the images after he saw them while we were both in residence at the Macdowell Colony. I am honored to have worked with him on the project.
The archival inkjet photographs were printed at the Print Studios at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with the assistance of Khanh Le. I then printed the three layers of lithographic inks on an incredible DUFA IVA in the same studios. Daniel Keleher and I did all the letterpress at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Hadley Massachusetts using his collection of Univers fonts. The binding is by Barry Spence from The Open Book Bindery in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. |

Ten images inspired by Vicente Huidodros epic poem "Altazor". Rather than illustrating the poem, the text was used as a point of departure to an experience in working on the images. The result is a kind of documentation of a journey that begins with "Altazor".
First, the black images were developed on the etching plates and then digitally photographed. The underlying color images were then developed on the computer and printed as four-color lithographs on Japanese paper. They were then used as chine collé sheets to be printed with the etchings.

Texts By Egil and Thorsten Dennerline
Three-color lithographs are overlaid with text/diagrams printed on translucent Japanese paper. Because of the translucency, the text and image become one but can also be viewed separately by turning the pages. Egil and Thorsten each wrote half of the texts.

This book was made at the intaglio studios at "Taller del Alquimista" in Valparaiso, on the coast of Chile. Four artists participated, Franciso Carroza, Jorge Martinez Garcia, Thorsten Dennerline, and Luis Martinez Salas.
The idea of the square book stems from Jorge Martinez’s interest in alchemy -he actually named his etching shop "Studio of the Alchemist" in reference to the processes of intaglio print making. The starting point for how to organize this project, stemmed from ideas within alchemy about how geometry is linked to the universe. He writes about this in the prologue page. Four artists participated, each creating 4 square images. Each artist was also asked to work with text in at least two of his images. Four artists, four plates each with four equal sides, all contained within a square binding. Thus, the number 4 (or the square) begins to repeat itself and even the edition is 44. This is reflected in the symbol on the cover, the circle within the square. (All text Spanish).

Peter Laugesen created a series of 8 new poems for this book in 1999. The etchings are meant to be an accompaniment to the text that functions as a collaboration similar to the way musicians might play together. The text for this bilingual edition was printed by Daniel Keleher in Hadley, Massachusetts using specially cast type from the Letterfoundry of Michael and Winifred Bixler in Skaneateles, New York. The original Danish version is printed on translucent Seikishu Japanese paper so it can viewed mirroring the English translation or opposite on the verso page. |
